ABOUT

British based Hong Kong born Edwin Sung is a composer who has been largely self-taught. His passion is in music for orchestra, for which most of his music is written. He believes this has a great ability to bring people together and to enjoy making music. His music largely has a cheerful and uplifting sound, reflecting his outlook on life and on music. His music has won competitions by orchestras including the English Schools’ Orchestra, the Edinburgh-based Really Terrible Orchestra, and the Netherlands based Amersfoorts Jeugd Orkest. His music has been praised by figures such as Edward Gregson and Vanessa Lann.

Since 2020, Edwin has been working to support “Help Musicians” Charity in relation to Coronavirus restrictions with a video of his music “Concert d’un rêve lucide”. Being charitable and community minded meant he was moved to support fellow musicians affected by the restrictions.

Travel forms a major part of Edwin’s life, as he frequently visits (when permitted!) many places primarily around Europe and Asia. Travel, nature and the different cultures he meets form a lot of his inspirations in his music writing. Examples of this include Celtic inspirations in his pieces “An Irish Reel - Where’s my Fiddle?”  and “Kinvara” which were written after visiting Gort in Ireland, and visits to Scotland inspired him to write “A Wee Bit of Irish-Scottish Jig”, which won the Really Terrible Orchestra’s composers’ competition in 2018.

Edwin’s musical background began from an early age, and he quickly became accomplished playing piano, violin and trombone. He passed a diploma in both piano and violin at the age of 13. He started composing as soon as he was able to as well, and quickly found out how excited he got when writing music. Edwin graduated in mathematics from Peterhouse College Cambridge in 2014. He is heavily involved in music within his local community of Cambridge.
