An exciting moment for both myself and the Cambridge Sinfonietta – where I play the 2nd violins – to have an orchestral piece “Promenade dans la vallee de la Marne” written for them to premiere on 4th July 2019 this year at St. Giles’ Church, Cambridge!
“Promenade dans la vallee de la Marne” is an orchestral piece written while on a road trip to the beautiful region of Champagne in December 2018. The gentle south-facing slopes, with sun shining on the lines of barren vines, inspired me to express my experience there in terms of music.
The style of the music takes inspiration from impressionism, such as Debussy and Ravel – It focuses on atmosphere and suggestion. The absence of a long-term fixated tonality or predictable tonal modulations makes the music more intriguing to listen to, but yet the melodies and harmonies possibly suggest a surprising similarity to the 20th century impressionist style.
